Hair Types

We all know that there are different types of hair like straight, wavy, curly, and coily. Knowing your hair type is the main foundation of building a successful haircare routine. Different hair types have various kinds of characteristics, and needs, understanding your hair type allows you to choose the right products and techniques to maintain beautiful hair.

There are a couple of easy steps you need to do, to know what kind of hair you have:

  1. Deeply wash your hair to remove any leftover products and natural oils and let it dry.
  2. Check the shape and texture of your hair.

You should notice straight away what kind of hair type you have (straight, curly, wavy, coily).

Hair Care Products

We use two main products in our hair care routine: shampoo and conditioner to keep them in perfect condition. As mentioned before, different hair types require different types of products.

Shampoos

Straight Hair: Bumble and bumble Gentle Shampoo
Wavy Hair: OUAI Medium Shampoo
Curly Hair: Virtue Smooth Shampoo
Coily Hair: Redken All Soft Mega Curls Shampoo

Straight hair – mainly requires a shampoo that controls oil and maintains hair shine.

Wavy hair – is often dry, so it requires shampoo with hydration.

Curly and Coily hair – both require sulfate-free shampoo that moisturizes and doesn’t strip natural oils.

Conditioners

Straight Hair: Function of Beauty Conditioner
Wavy Hair: MopTop Leave-in Conditioner
Curly Hair: Sheamoisture Daily Hydrating Conditioner
Coily Hair: Rahua Voluminous Conditioner

Straight hair – a lightweight conditioner with easy moisture.

Wavy hair – conditioner that delivers a rich amount of hydration, to deeply smooth out the hair.

Curly and Coily hair – requires conditioner with extra slip to detangle and define curls.

Hair Care Routine

Cleanse

Cleansing is one of the most important steps that comes in a haircare routine, as it removes dirt and oil that has accumulated throughout the day.

The shampoo helps remove these impurities and ensures your hair looks clean and feels fresh. We’d recommend you use shampoo every 2-3 days, as too much cleansing with shampoo can overdry your scalp.

Regular cleansing can also promote hair growth and improve hair appearance, as oils and dirt can weigh hair down.

Condition

Every time you use shampoo, you should also use a conditioner, it will help to maintain the health and appearance of your hair.

One of the main aspects is that it will hydrate and give shininess to the hair.

There are different types of conditioners (rinse-out, leave-in, deep), that will provide you with different benefits, so you’ll be able to choose your hair needs.

Deep Conditioning

Deep conditioning should be less frequent than normal conditioning, 2-3 weeks. The main benefits of deep conditioning are reduced frizz, improved shine and softness, scalp health, and color protection.

The conditioner should contain moisturizing ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, and honey.
Keratin and collagen will strengthen and repair the hair.
Natural oils will provide deep nourishment.
Vitamins and antioxidants will protect the hair from environmental damage.

Leave-In Treatments

Leave-in treatments can come in a different way of forms, conditioners, serums, oils, and lotions. A leave-in treatment aims to help smooth, detangle, hydrate, protect the hair, and allow you to style it easily. We cannot tell how frequently you should use this type of treatment, because it varies on the product you’re using, your hair, and specific needs.

Styling

When it comes to hair care routine, the most important thing to us is styling, there are a lot of styling products, tools, and techniques, on how you can make your hair listen to you and achieve the desired look.

Products

Volumizer – Lifts hair, and creates a thicker “full” look, without feeling heavy.

Mousse – Adds texture without stiffness, helps to lift the hair, and lets the style stay in place all day.

Gel – No matter what, the hair will stay in place, as gel provides a strong hold and definition. But… using it daily can cause dryness and stiffness.

Serum – Strengthens your hair, and reduces frizz. It depends on how much you use, but it can help to hold your hair.

Wax – Almost the same as gel, but it also adds moisture.

Texturizer – Loosens the curls, and adds texture, volume, and lift.

Hair spray – Different levels of hold, depending on how much you use it. It will also help to protect from wind and humidity.

Oil – If you want your hair to be shiny and without flyaways.

Tools

Blow Dryer – One of the fastest ways you can dry out your hair and add some smoothness.

Curling Iron Wand – One of the most used on the list. This tool creates tight, small-sized curls or waves.

Hot Rollers – Creates almost identical types of curls as curling iron wand, but bigger and looser.

Velcro Rollers – Ideal for shorter hair to make curls without heat.

Hair Brushes – We all know what it’s for, but there are different types of hair brushes like paddle, vent, round, and many more that have different benefits like smoothing, curling, and lifting.

Combs – Can separate tangled hair and allow for easy styling.

Hot Air Brush – This is a blow dryer + round brush, a 2in1 product that is ideal for drying and styling your hair.

Scalp Care

Taking care of your scalp is probably one of the most important things in hair care, as it can affect your hair growth and overall appearance. If the scalp isn’t cared for, it can lead to itchiness, dryness, and sometimes even hair loss.

We may think that shampoo is the only thing that helps with scalp care, but there’s a lot more, even your diet can impact your scalp.

Scalp Care Tips
  1. Drink plenty of water and maintain overall hydration.
  2. Have a balanced diet, rich in vitamins like zinc and omega-3.
  3. Always wear a hat, when it’s sunny outside, cause it can dry out the scalp.
  4. Avoid harsh chemicals in shampoos, and conditioners as they can irritate the scalp.
  5. Get enough sleep to allow your body to repair.
